Google “Do no Evil”?

Is it enough for Google to say “Do no Evil” as quoted in it’s philosophy statement? Well to custodians of five major public pension funds in New York City it is not enough. As quoted in today’s Wired’s blog post:

the pension managers will ask Google at its annual shareholder meeting to be more proactive in combating censorship in countries like China, Egypt and Iran.

You still think a business’ job is just to earn money for it’s shareholders? Well then why were some companies like IBM vilified for selling products and services to the Nazi’s before the US entrance into World War II? Easy... it was wrong.

Further isn’t Google being hypocritical by also stating in its philosophy statement that “The need for information crosses all borders.” True but then why are they preventing the flow between countries like China and the rest of the world. I will tell you why... the mighty dollar or in this case the Yuan.

The famous quote: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" (attributed to Edmund Burke) is very true. Perhaps it is time Google revisits it mission statement or I will start using Yahoo.
