Biofuel: Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC)

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) online is a pretty handy tool to sift through applicable alternative fuel information that you can use (http://www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/).

Types of alternative fuels are detailed and explained clearly. If there is a fuel that is part of the major energy market, it’s listed here, and you can find information about what each fuel is, how it’s made, and compare them against each other. A price report is also included.

The AFDC also details alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) to include current and upcoming government incentives to operate such vehicles. They tell you where you can purchase, fuel and maintain AFVs. One cool thing is that you can search the current database of AFVs by type, manufacturers, mpg, and other variables to define AFVs that suite your needs. You can also find auctions where the government is selling AFVs.

The Fueling and Infrastructure section allows you to search for the closest fuel stations near you by city, state, mile radius and type of fuel. The Route Mapper tool allows you to plot a course that takes you past alternative fueling stations. You can query the stations database. They also have a nice table that simplifies how many alternative fuel stations there are in each state.

The AFDC lays out the different applications of AFVs to cover tractor-trailers, buses, trucks, and so forth. Each of these sections leads to more extensive information, including information for anyone that may be building an AFV fleet. Finally the site defines Federal and State laws and incentives, and includes a reference section to keep your research flowing. Check this site out, it’s tax money well spent.
