First Global Solar Flight

The first flight around the world using only solar power is scheduled to happen in 2011. The flight is the dream and goal of Solar Impulse, a team of over 35 people supported by over 100 scientific advisors. The idea is to create a symbol in the flight of not just the possibilities of solar power, but also as yet another inspiration into the possibilities and excitement of scientific adventure.

The project is reeling in big investors including Solvay (pharmaceuticals, chemicals, plastics), Omega (watches), and Deutsche Bank, as well as a wide range of partners like Altran (aerospace and sustainable energy), Semper (financial consulting), Victorinox (Swiss knives), BKW (Swiss energy group), and Sputnik Engineering (inverters).

This is a fascinating venture, and there’s a great FAQ page here http://www.solarimpulse.com/faq-en111.html
